Everything2: More informative than any encyclopedia
Those who have read The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy are aware of the guide itself - a digital book containing a wealth of information regarding various topics about various places of the universe. More fanatical readers of the series also know about H2G2, a variant of the Guide currently maintained by the BBC.
However, on this side of the Atlantic, there's Everything2. Anyone can submit articles ("write-ups") about any random topic ("nodes"). The Everything2 system promotes submission of good write-ups by providing a complex scoring/rating system. In addition, similar topics may be linked together (Quake and Doom, for example), providing a good overview of any concept.
There's the orthodox topics, ranging from The Lord of the Rings to biochemistry. However, the Everything2 userbase's true ingenuities are seen in the usually-worthless entries.
Examples:
cat shaving techniques
Love poem from the monsters under my bed
Sensei, we've got another lesbian stuck in the goddamn shredder
I don't remember what life was like when I was seven. I like the taste of air. What should I do?
Yet another time waster for the soon-to-be-blind.
